Self Ligating Braces

What are Self Ligating Braces?

Traditional braces use elastic ties to hold the wires into the brackets, which can create friction, increase binding, and introduce more variation into they way that wires are adapted to the bracket slot. Self-ligating braces use a metal door to hold the wires into the bracket. This reduces friction, allows us to use gentler forces, and achieve more predictable biomechanics.

Traditional braces: The colored elastic ties are tight and “sticky”. Because the friction must be overcome for teeth to move, higher forces are required

Self ligating braces: The brackets have an integrated door that opens and closes to hold the wire. Because there is less friction, lighter forces can be placed on teeth, while resulting in more efficient tooth movement.

Some other advantages of self-ligating braces:

  • Less frequent visits to the orthodontist (appointments are usually 7-8 weeks apart)

  • Easier to clean

  • More comfortable
